What is it about: Its crime action drama, in which the journey of a young lad in climbing his success ladder is spun in the most unconventional way, how he manages to reach his destination forms the crux of the story directed by Rajkumar Periasamy.
Why it’s disappointing: I have no qualms about this film.
What to watch out for: First movie, first impression and that first impact on audience is one of the main factors in establishing as a filmmaker. And director Rajkumar Periasamy, did a fine job achieving that in a most entertaining manner. The film poses a simple story of a young lad, who is determined to be something in life, and the path he chooses defines the character of the film. And the way the screenplay is spun around this, makes this one stand out from the crowd. Rangoon, has all the required ingredients for a commercial entertainer, yet it follows an unconventional notion in conveying its point, and that my friends was the best part, which makes you sit glued to your seats in the second half of the film. It does makes you think at point, that the director is taking quite a scenic route in the first half to reach the core of the subject, but he lays a perfect foundation for the second half, which doesn’t take a breath and runs at a steady pace.
Gautham Karthik, finally he gets a solid launch as a lead. His previous films, didn’t do well and needed a break which became a dire need in the crowded and competitive business. Most definitely this will mark one of the best in his career, and Gautham gave a commendable performance.
Lallu, how plays the role of his best friend was a peculiar character and he did a great job. So did Daniel Pope, I would say watch the film and you will end up applauding for his performance.
Sana Makbul, a new entry as an actress in the Kollywood. But she felt quite comfortable and did her part really well. Lip sync and emotions were perfectly intact.
Siddique, he plays a prominent role in the film as “Siya”. And his role has a great significance and was played to its best.
The cinematography by Anish Tharun Kumar was great, he had a nice touch of tone, which kept the details well in their place with the period. The editing by Prasanna GK and Vijay was tight. Music by Vikram RH was good and had a gripping background score by Vishal Chandrasekhar.
Forgot to mention, the action by Anbuariv was great, which was natural and well-choreographed.
Verdict: Rajkumar Periasamy, did a fantastic job in keeping the essence intact and not deflecting from the core of the subject. And he weaves a great play which impresses you, especially in the second half. Definitely worth a watch, don’t miss this one.
