What is it about: It’s the fifth instalment in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. In this we see Henry Turner son of Will Turner is on a journey to release his father from the curse of the sea, and the adventures he meets during that forms the crux of the story directed by Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg.
Why it’s disappointing: If you look on it collectively you’ll see this as a sinking ship. I still wonder, why the change in directors, there was something which didn’t fit right there. The screenplay kind of wears you out, as it doesn’t offer anything new or exciting, nor does it explore the nuances. It dwells on the previous films and sails through their support. The character cameo’s from previous films just fills in the screenplay, which gives no room for the audience to like this one better.
Javier Bardem, seemed quite lost in the film, as the attire didn’t suit him well.
What to watch out for: The film fails to captivate the moment, but the sinking ship is saved by its central characters, who were determined to make this one sail through to extend the franchise to a 6th film.
Without a doubt, Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow steals the show. His RUM jokes laced with sexual innuendo’s are neatly scripted with humour. He manages to hold the audience with his funny antics.
Then there was a surprise package in the name of Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. She gave a solid performance, which had the shades of Keira from the first film.
Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner, manages to sail though, as he was not given much of a scope to perform in this film.
But when it’s a fantasy adventure film, CGI plays a vital part and that was flawlessly rendered with amazing VFX which seems life like. IMAX 3D was an icing on the cake, it takes you deep in to the ocean with its magic. The sound design and mix was spectacular.
Cinematography by Paul Cameron was delectable and was crisply edited by Roger & Leigh. The action was choreographed well and the score by Geoff Zanelli was gripping.
Verdict: Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg, couldn’t do much of a justice to this sequel, but still manages to bank on the characteristics from previous films and makes this ship sail through. Definitely worth a watch, and don’t miss out on the post credit scene which leaves a neat lead to the 6th film.
