What is it about: It’s a period war film set in the backdrop of World War II. It portrays the life of Mary Ann Evans a.k.a Fearless Nadia. Who was the first and original stunt woman in Bollywood. The life period during that time, forms the crux of the story directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.

Why it’s disappointing: Usually Vishal’s movie are hard to digest by the audience due to approach he has towards it. Rangoon was dark but not Vishal Bhardwaj dark. This time he tried something little different and it quite didn’t go well. And that factor made the credibility dangle making the audience wonder what’s exactly wrong with this one. The film loses out here and there, most definitely in the climax which becomes a clichéd Bollywood masala.

What to watch out for: The film had a strong ensemble of cast Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan and Richard McCabe.

Shahid Kapoor has a flavour when it comes to Vishal’s movies and he does that with élan. And this was no different, he did a commendable job.

Kangana Ranaut, was fantastic. She steals the show from the entire cast. Amazing performer and can don a role of “Julia” like a child’s play. She was fabulous.

Saif Ali Khan, had a lesser scope for performance, but the given space he did a great job.

The surprise package was Richard McCabe, he was great and did a fantastic job in churning out landmark Hindi film dialogues with “Shaayari” laced in to it.

Rangoon had a great tone, which Bollywood had never seen before. A delectable job by Pankaj Kumar. And it was crisply edited by Aalaap. The music by Vishal Bhardwaj was good and so was the gripping background score.

The film being set in period demands good VFX and it was splendid. Which was well backed by a crunching sound design.

Verdict: Vishal Bhardwaj, did neat job in portraying the Fearless Nadia. In spite of losing it here and there. His cast didn’t let him down. And this made Rangoon a commendable watch.
