What is it about: This is film which deals with the nuances of arranged marriage and the commotion surrounding it. It moves around 6 central subjects whose lives are predominantly revolves around one and only thing marriage. The film is directed by debutante Nelson Venkatesan.
Why it’s disappointing: There’s nothing much to ponder on the negativity for ONK. The only thing which could work against it would be the pace, which the general audience might feel is quite a drag.
What to watch out for: It’s really courageous of director Nelson to pick a subject of this sort. Mostly debutante choose horror or thriller or a slapstick comedy. It’s quite impressive of him to play around with something our country runs high on “Marriage”.
Marriage, is something which one can’t explain in simple words. A part of life which becomes so trivial that it becomes less about the two who are getting married and more about the people surrounding them. Especially in a country which is still quite reserve on this matter, it’s one hell of a big deal. ONK makes quite a good case on the people surrounding and points out how everyone choose to ignore the obvious. The film meticulously moves around the central subjects, which are self-explanatory.
The cast was pretty good, nothing to rave about the performances, but it was like an apt fit. Dinesh Ravi, is on see-saw. If he gives one applauding performance, in the next he dips down. He manages to get through. Mia George was a great fit and perfectly suited the character of Lakshmi. Nivetha Pethuraj, did a good one for a debut. And she kind of broke few hearts with her sweet looks. Riythvika once again scores with her performance, which comes naturally for her, eager to see her in “Kabali”. Bala Saravanan and Ramesh Thilak try pretty hard to crack the audience, which worked in parts.
The film had neat cinematography by Gokul, which went well with the mood of the film and was cut well by Sabu Joseph. The music by Justin Prabhakaran was great, couple of numbers were really mellow and soothing.
Verdict: Nelson Venkatesan may not have begun with a bang, but he hit the right note. When a guy or girl or their parents who have watched ONK, will definitely pause for a moment and think about the commotion surrounding the marriage. Nelson did a good job in travelling through the subjects which had a neat narration putting things together. Definitely worth a watch, try to catch it on the big screens.
