What is it about: The film is about a dysfunctional family of Kapoors, who come together as their grandad suffers from a heart attack in Coonoor. How they cope up with the lost time and how it ends in a mess forms the crux of the story directed by Shakun Batra.
Why it’s disappointing: There’s nothing disappointing in this film, except for the fact the credits didn’t have “Let’s Nacho” video.
What to watch out for: We have seen “N” number of family dramas in Bollywood, and how it has been sugar coated so that melodrama paves it way gloriously. But this one takes a U turn on that formula. The films does preach family values, but also teaches a thing or two. The story spun by Shakun Batra & Ayesha Devitre Dhillon has a great emotional and practical values, which became the strong suit of “Kapoor & Sons”.
After the story comes the characters and their characterization which was top notch. All the actors performed their roles, which fetched great admiration from the audience.
Rishi Kapoor, the senior most from the herd did a fantastic job. He was extremely adorable as Amarjeet Kapoor. Looking at his character, one would wish a grandad like him or would like to become one when the time comes. A cool grandad who has the traits of DIRTY GRANDPA rolled into Bollywood. He cracks you instantly with his witty one liners and comic sense. In this film he becomes the uncrowned king of characters.
Fawad Khan, an Import from Pakistan has proven to be one of the best in recent times. He’s adored by the ladies of all ages and is a great actor too. He was next to Rishi, and did a commendable job as Rahul Kapoor.
Sidharth Malhotra is warming up great in Bollywood and growing to be a great actor as his movie count increases. His role was aptly placed and was like tailor made for him. As Arjun Kapoor, he did an amazing job.
Alia Bhatt, you can troll her all you want for her intellectuality. But can you when it comes to performance. I’m sure you can’t, because she does that with élan and is the cutest heartbeat of Bollywood. As Tia she captures you instantly.
Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak Shah, made a great case on being the most convincing incompatible couple on screen. Their fights and arguments makes you go mad at places and a few makes you laugh hard. They were great together and did a fantastic job.
The cinematography by Jeffery Bierman was spectacular, which captured the Coonoor at its best, keeping the mood perfect choosing the right colour for the film. It was perfectly edited by Shivkumar Panicker. The music was by various artists in the movie. My pick is “Kar Gayi Chull” by Badshah, a swift and peppy number driving the nation crazy and as the beat dropped, the theatre went crazy. “Bolna” was a soothing track by Tanishk Bagchi.
Verdict: Shakun Batra did a great job in creating a family drama, which highlights the obvious ignorance in everyone’s lives. A perfect entertainer, which among the tough bitterness, shows the hidden ingredient LOVE buried underneath the ego of relationships. And this ingredient is what touches you, making this one of the best release of 2016 till date from Bollywood. Please don’t miss it, if possible watch it with your whole family to get the most out of it.
