Todd Haynes Carol may win 1st Golden Globe Award: To those who just catch some fuzzy glimpse of Carol, they would probably think of another homosexual love movie from Todd Haynes (who told the tales of two men loving each other Far from Heaven). In point of fact, the opposite is true, and it may seek you out over your life time.
The film was set to be in the autumnal and drizzly city of New York back from the age of 1950s, the time of gentle straight man and alluring straight woman; and folks at this time, in general, had no idea of the normalcy or just even tiny flickers of tolerance if there’s ever someone who has a queer attraction to a person of the same sex. Such romantic relationship was considered to be shameful and scandalous, not to mention filthy and disgraceful by the public’s typical point of view. The love affair of two women obviously is to be on the verge of ostracism, of suffering from political and social judgment and thus maybe we ought to feel sympathetic or have they in our genuine accord?
A negative response is promptly given, as Carol (starring Cate Blanchett) barely engaged us that way, but her seduction and passion for long-trapped love did. Due to her loveless marriage and likely-confined relationship with her husband, a need of breaking free was unexpectedly and naturally sparked when she met Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) on her way to Christmas shopping and later in an upscale hotel bar, and their fall for each other delivers such impassioned, heartfelt and extremely romantic liaison in which we’ve never seen before since the epic romance of “Romeo and Juliet” released.
Every single tiny movements, gestures and glances weigh heavily on our heart and our mind. A mood of cannot let it go, keep lingering in our consciousness. The slow pace of the film gives us not boredom but intense gradually-crafting moment that leaves us smiling or shedding tears. The story of two individual women seeking each other’s arms for refuge has turned out a redemption for all of us, of not necessarily letting our emotion run over, but to have it flown in its own harmony.
Carol is the second film of director Todd Haynes alluding to relationship between same gender, and it is nominated as The Best Motion Picture – Drama at 73rd Golden Globe Awards and the stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara are equally also share the same opportunity to be announced as the Best Actress in dramatic movie of the year.
Pull yourself together and watch the film, for this movie is too good to be true.
