What is it about: It’s a story of a young lad, who falls in love at first sight. Later a road trip planned in which that girl accompanies him, one unfortunate day an accident happens, which turns things upside down for them, what happens later forms the crux of the story directed by Gautam Vasudev Menon.
Why it’s disappointing: The technique used in AYM is not new to us, that’s what we call the GVM technique. And he has this way of putting across things, which most of the people don’t like. The dialogues were very random, and doesn’t have a grip on the sequences in the film. The film which is breezy in the first half shifts to a different dimension in the second half, which as filmmaker GVM enjoyed making it. But the general audience gets pretty tired, because his techniques can’t be grasped by the masses, in spite of being a good one. This pretty much makes a weak link to the film.
What to watch out for: The film had an amazing lead cast, Silambarasan and Manjima Mohan made a pretty good face for the film.
Simbu does a solid one and he’s one actor who can perform really well given a fitting character. Leave aside his personal life as an artist he’s most definitely a good one. The character played by him grows up to be a man, and that smoothly performed with great style and humour. Simbu did a commendable job.
Manjima Mohan, a newbie to Kollywood did suit the GVM heroine, she may not be “Maya” or “Jesse” but most definitely a charming “Leela”. She did a great job and will be the current sensation among the guys.
Baba Sehgal, regardless of nativity did a great job. His character was well derived with different languages which he performed it with great diligence.
The music by AR Rahman was definitely the highest point, which is breezy and soulful in the first half and is gripping with a solid background score in the second half.
Cinematography by Dan Macarthur was splendid, he did a great job and matching both moods of the film with a delightful viewing experience. And that was precisely and crisply edited by Anthony.
The stunts were beautifully choreographed by Stunt Silva, who kept it real with not many added strings.
Verdict: Gautam Menon once again displayed his love for Khaki wrapped in a love story, which has the pleasant and dark shades split in to equal halves. Don’t compare this film with his previous ones, and go in with no expectations. You’ll end up liking it. The only reason we have rated this 3 stars is because the way GVM narrates.
